New York - Almost one year to the day after he was freed from prison in Bolivia and nearly two and a half years since his incarceration in
South America, Brooklyn businessman Yanky Ostreicher has returned to the United States.
Ostreicher’s daughter, Chaya Gitty Weinberger, confirmed that her father, who was kidnapped and held ransom by unknown parties in Bolivia, is safely back in the United States.
“What happened was that he was missing for close to a week,” Mrs. Weinberger told VIN News. “They contacted my father’s office in Bolivia and they spoke to an uncle, Aaron Ostreicher, who negotiated with them.”
Mrs. Weinberger did not know the exact amount of ransom that was paid for Ostreicher’s release.
“They dropped my father in international Pacific waters and from there he was taken to an undisclosed location in the United States,” said Mrs. Weinberger, who added that while Aaron Ostreicher has spoken with her father, she has not yet been able to do so.
Mrs. Weinberger said that despite rumors to the contrary, she did not know anything about possible involvement by actor Sean Penn in Ostreicher’s release.
“We have heard such a rumor but I don’t know how he could have been involved here,” said Mrs. Weinberger.

“I am beyond overjoyed,” said Mrs. Weinberger. “I can’t wait to hear his voice. I know that he is sick but Baruch Hashem he is back here and we will take care of him.”
Assemblyman Dov Hikind, who has been an outspoken voice for Ostreicher’s release, expressed his overwhelming joy on today’s events.
“I thank Hashem that Yanky Ostreicher is back in the United States,” said Hikind. “The family has gone through a lot and as difficult as it is, he will be able to continue living beyond this horrible ordeal that he went through.”

Here is the story
Mr. Ostreicher oversaw millions of dollars from partners that he invested in the rice business in Bolivia. Two and a half years ago, land and dozens of tons of rice owned by Ostreicher were confiscated by – what was not known publicly at the time – a web of corrupt Bolivian officials. To add insult to injury, Mr. Ostreicher was arrested on charges that he was involved with the Bolivian underworld
Mr. Ostreicher was held in Bolivia’s worst prison for more than eighteen months and was released last December to House arrest. Since then, Mr. Ostreicher has upped his efforts to expose via the Judicial system (in itself slow and corrupt) the corrupt Government officials who extorted him. Mr. Ostreicher’s efforts implicated powerful government officials including Prosecutors, Judges, Law Enforcement officers, and some in the Administration of Bolivia’s President Evo Morales
The Bolivia Government had on its hands three plausible options
1)
Continue to endure Mr. Ostreicher’s effort to uncover the web of lies and corruption that stole from him and dumped him in prison. This would come at the expense of more officials going down and eventually forcing the Government to repay him the millions that was stolen from him
2)
Admit error and release Mr. Ostreicher after treating him for more than two years as the Devil. This would have been a bitter pill for the South American country because they framed the American Yankee as corrupt and dangerous. Making an about face would have not worked
3)
Have Mr. Ostreicher “escape” Bolivia whereby Mr. Ostreicher as a “fugitive” gives up his less-than-slim chance to redeem his millions via court action in Bolivia. It gets Bolivia’s problem off its hand without admitting guilt or exposing more corruption
The problem with option three is that it shames the Bolivian Government in the eyes of its citizens. Namely, an American under Federal House arrest able to escape is not exactly a source of pride
Enter the kidnaping
The effort is on to tell the world that Mr. Ostreicher was kidnapped, which means there is little the Bolivian Government could have done about an armed gang descending onto Mr. Ostreicher’s home and kidnapping him in the dead of night. With this narrative everyone is happy: Mr. Ostreicher is in the safety of the USA. The corrupt Government officials who dreaded what the next Court Day may reveal, are happy too because they got rid of the Ostreicher problem without bringing shame to the Country
This plan may seem elaborate. Better yet, it’s possible that an actual kidnapping was indeed orchestrated, and that Mr. Ostreicher himself was not in on what is being planned on his behalf! (Different sources indicate to both those points and to the Government’s involvement) but as we wrote at the start of this report: Much of the information surrounding this story will never be proven or disproven. Family telling something to the press does not make it so. Those close to the action confirming each other’s story is very likely pre-planned talking points rather than actual fact. Bolivian Government Declares Jacob Ostreicher A Fugitive; Alerting Interpol
Bolivia’s government says it considers American businessman Jacob Ostreicher a fugitive after unknown groups helped him flee across the border into Peru, and will ask Washington to extradite him, AP reports.
Justice Minister Cecilia Allyon said in a press conference Tuesday she doesn’t know whether the U.S. government played a role in Ostreicher’s escape.
“He is someone being processed for common crimes and has no immunity,” Ayllon told reporters. “This affords us greater clearance in requesting his extradition.”
According to Allyon, Ostreicher entered Peru illegally and then boarded a U.S.-bound plane on Monday. She said Bolivia is alerting Interpol in bringing him back to Bolivia.
“Let’s not forget that this man has made a media show, made himself ill to get out and then as he has achieved freedom, the first thing he has done is to flee,” the minister said.
