לעא איז געווען א בראווער איד און נאך יארן זיך באהאלטן און אנטלויפן פון די לאנגע האנט פון די נאציס האט מען אים דערווישט און אצינד איז ער געזעצן צאמגעקוועטשט אין דעם באן און זיין מח האט געפיבערט און געווירבלט מיט געדאנקען וויאזוי ער קען זיך ארויסראטעווען פון דעם טויט קאסטן. מיט סייעתא דשמיא איז אים געלונגען ארויסצושפרינגען פון דעם פארנדיגן באן און איז געווען נאר איינער פון פינף - פון צווישן טויזענט פון דעם טראנספארט - איבערצולעבן דעם מלחמה.
לעא זאגט אז ער פלעגט כסדר טראכטן צו זיך, אז היות אז די קאמפאני איז באצאלט געווארן דורך די עס עס, פאר יעדן מענטש, פער מייל וואס מען האט אים געפירט, האט די קאמפאני באקומען א טייל פון די געלט פאר די האלבע וועג וואס זיי האבן אים געפירט? וואלטן זיי געמאכט מער געלט ווען ער קומט ווען יא אן קיין אוישוויץ?
אבער בשעת רוב קאמפאניס וואס האבן געטוהן די סארט ארבעט פאר די נאציס האבן במשך די יארן באצאלט פארגיטיגונג פאר די געליטענע, האט SNCF קאטעגאריש אפגעזאגט יעדן פארלאנג און בקשה פאר פארגיטיגונג. עד היום האבן זיי נישט באצאלט קיין ראסטיגן פעני פאר די געליטענע.
לעא וואוינט היינט אין מערילענד און ער איז געווארן שאקירט ווען ער איז געוואויר געווארן לעצטענס אז די קאמפאני וועלכע האט אים געפירט האלב ביז אוישוויץ, און פון וועמענס הענט ער האט זיך מיט ניסים ארויסגעראטעוועט, פרובירן גאר צו באקומען א רעגירונגס קאנטראקט פאר א נייעם רעיל סיסטעם אין מערילענד. דער קאנטראקט איז ווערט ארום זעקס ביליאן טאללער, יא, ביליאן מיט א ב' דגושה. דער פראיעקט ווערט טיילווייז פינאנצירט דורך די רעגירונג. דאס מיינט אז לעא, אויף דעם עלטער פון אריבער ניינציג יאר, דארף פינאנצירן מיט זיינע שטייערן א זעקס ביליאן טאללער קאנטראקט פאר די קאמפאני וועלכע האט געמאכט געלט פון אים פירן קיין אוישוויץ!!!

My friend, Leo Bretholtz, was a young man when he risked his life to jump off a French train bound for Auschwitz. There were 1,000 people on that train, and Leo later found out that only 5 survived the Holocaust. That train was run by the French national rail company, SNCF, which was paid by the Nazis to transport Jews, American pilots who'd been shot down, and others to Nazi death camps. But unlike other companies paid by the Nazis, SNCF never paid a cent of reparations to Holocaust survivors.
Today, I write you with very positive news in our decades-long fight to hold SNCF accountable for its Holocaust-era atrocities. On Monday, representatives from the U.S. and French governments signed a binding agreement that will provide a $60 million compensation fund to numerous survivors and their heirs, in recognition of the horrific Holocaust-era actions perpetrated by SNCF. This agreement -- which comes almost 70 years after the end of the Holocaust -- will bring a measure of justice to many of SNCF’s victims and their families. Moreover, it represents an important admission by SNCF and the French Government that they were complicit in the atrocities of the Holocaust.
As a young girl in France, I was lucky to be hidden from the Nazis by a kind family. But my father was taken from me and sent to Auschwitz on an SNCF train. He was then sent to Buchenwald, where they murdered him just five days before liberation.
Over the past year, I and many other Holocaust survivors have been touched by the outpouring of support we have received from countless individuals who believe SNCF should be held accountable for the role it played in the deaths of more than 75,000 Jews, including my father.
This historic agreement would not have been possible without the support and encouragement of more than 165,000 on Change.org, the state and federal elected officials and advocates across the globe who have lent their voices to our cause, and especially Ambassador Stuart Eizenstat and his State Department team who have worked tirelessly to achieve this agreement. For all of these efforts, I will be forever grateful.
Although no settlement could ever adequately address the horrors of the Holocaust, and while we are saddened that this agreement does not include many who were transported on the trains, it represents invaluable closure and an historic milestone for numerous survivors who endured these dark hours. And yet, today’s news is particularly bittersweet in that it arrives too late for Leo Bretholz, an extraordinary man and advocate for SNCF’s victims. Leo’s daring escape from an SNCF train bound for Auschwitz, and his subsequent dedication over so many decades to tell this story and to tirelessly pursue justice, is such a big part of why this agreement happened, and we owe so much to Leo. Although Leo is no longer with us, his spirit, determination and his belief that there should be accountability for the horrors of the Holocaust continue to inspire us all.
Thank you for making this moment possible. Thank you for fighting for Leo's honor, for my father's honor, and for the honor of all the other victims whose names live on through us.
