They decided to take a walk around the lake that's right near the hotel, adjacent to the woods.
The land around the lake is not very even, and one girl slipped inside.
Her friend, knowing that she doesn't know how to swim, climbed in to help her out.
Once they were both (wet) and out of the lake, they tried climbing back up to ground level, but found that it was too steep.
So they kept walking around the lake to find a better spot to climb up, and they found an easy climbing spot leading into the woods.
They figured it wouldn't be a big deal to go in for a minute and circle back around to where they came from.
Once in the woods, they tried walking in the direction of street/car noises, sounded like it was very close to the street. The thing is though, that in thick woods, sounds bounce back and forth... and while they kept thinking that they were just steps away from the main street, they were really just walking deeper and deeper into the woods.
By now they were lost, and they knew they just had to keep walking till they hit the end, it couldn't be so far away!
It was getting dark, they were walking through mud and water... had already lost their socks and shoes... kept walking all nignt, trying not to fall asleep.
They saw a bear and plenty of other animals... miraculously they weren't harmed beyond loads of scratches and splinters head to toe.
When they saw/heard the first helicopter (around midnight), they decided to stay put and they climbed up a tree to try to flag it down the next time it came around.
When it came a few hours later and still didn't see them... they decided not to rely on its help, but to get out of the woods on their own.
They literally kept walking all night, some of the time in waist-deep water... until eventually they came to a small clearing, where the helicopter that came in the morning spotted them.
They are obviously shaken, but upbeat and so glad to be out.
