In theory, the existence within our secular society of a group which does not accept conventional values is consistent with our political vision. But one of the great problems of the United States, legally and politically, is that we have never quite had the courage of our convictions. The Republic is founded on the marvellously sane principle that a human community can exist and prosper only on a basis of mutual trust. Metaphysically, the American Revolution was a rejection of the dogma of Original Sin, which is the notion that because you cannot trust yourself or other people, there must be some Superior Authority to keep us all in order. The dogma was rejected because if it is true that we cannot trust ourselves and others, it follows that we cannot trust the Superior Authority which we ourselves conceive and obey and that the very idea of our own untrustworthiness is unreliable!

Citizens of the United States believe, or are supposed to believe, that a republic is the best form of government. Yet, vast confusion arises from trying to be republican in politics and monarchist in religion. How can a republic be the best form of government if the universe, heaven, and hell are a monarchy? Thus, despite the theory of government by consent, based upon mutual trust, the peoples of the United States retain, from the authoritarian backgrounds of their religions or national origins, an utterly naive faith in law as some sort of supernatural and paternalistic power

Nietzche believed that all forms of social egalitarianism are essentially decadent, because any form of social egalitarianism is a way of doing away with the hierarchical organization of society. But if the hierarchical organization of society is necessary for them to have the internal tension, which is the necessary condition for creation, then if you have a society with no internal hierarchical structures, a society of egalitarianism, then that society will definitely sooner or later become decadent. It will lose the ability to discriminate and differentiate in the way that's necessary for it to be able to really to see itself as a present value. Nietzsche always hated democracy. As a young man he withdrew from a student fraternity because the student fraternity was insufficiently hierarchically organized

The more the feeling of unity with one's fellow humans gains the upper hand, the more human beings are made uniform, the more they will perceive all difference or diversity as immoral. In this way, the sand of humanity necessarily comes into being: all very similar, very small, very round, very accommodating, very boring. Christianity and democracy have done the most to drive humanity along the path toward sand. A small, weak, glowing feeling of contentment equally distributed among all, an improved and extreme form of Chineseness, would that be the last image that humanity could offer? Inevitably, if we remain on the path of moral sensibilities until now. A great reflection is needed, perhaps humanity must draw a line under its past, perhaps it must address a new canon to all singular individuals: be different from all others, and take pleasure in each being different rom the other; the crudest monsters have certainly been eradicated under the prevailing regime of morality thus far - that was its task; but we do not wish to live on thoughtlessly under a regime of fear in the face of wild beasts. For so long, far too long, the word has been: One like All, One for All

Monarchy represents the belief in One wholly Supreme Being, a leader savior demigod. Aristocracy represents the belief in an elite humanity and higher caste. Democracy represents the unbelief in great humans and an elite society: 'everyone is the same as everyone'. At bottom we are all self-interested cattle and rabble

Plato’s historical environment was full of counterinstances to his political theory: the oligarchies’ massacre of 700 demos at Aegina in the early fifth century; the oligarchic destruction of the democracies in Samos (404 b.c.) and Rhodes (391 b.c.); the aristocratic defense of Phlius (the site for Plato’s Phaedo) in 369 b.c.; the democratic example of Plato’s aristocratic contemporary Empedocles at Acragas; the skytalismos democratic revolt in Argos (370 b.c.); and earlier the tyrannies of the sixth century, which were “quisling” regimes for their Persian masters. Modern historians like A. Fuks, Finley, Sealey, and St. Croix confirm similar problematics in the fifth and fourth centuries for Plato’s political theory. According to Paul Cartledge, the “Age of Revolution” preceding the appearances of democracy in the fifth century was conditioned by “relative overpopulation leading to settlement abroad and stimulating a decisive switch from pasturage to arable farming at home; growth of overseas trade, especially in metals and luxury goods and raw materials; decline of monarchy; full development of the polis; questioning of social and political values; and contrivance of new political expedients”

Most certainly, a strong anti-democratic spirit enveloped the proceedings at Philadelphia in 1787. Sherman of Connecticut abhorred direct elections: “The people” he said, “[immediately] should have as little to do as may be about the Government. They want information and are constantly liable to be misled.” Elbridge Gerry (Massachusetts), who refused to endorse the Convention’s agreement, suggested, “The evils we experience flow from the excess of democracy.” Madison (Virginia) warned, “Democratic communities may be unsteady, and be led to action by the impulse of the moment”

At the close of the convention, George Mason, the wealthy Virginian who also opposed the final constitutional draft, reported on its handiwork: “This government will set out a moderate aristocracy: it is at present impossible to foresee whether it will, in its operation, produce a monarchy, or a corrupt, tyrannical aristocracy; it will most probably vibrate some years between the two, and then terminate in the one or the other.” Madison, his social and political junior, agreed: the new state was an “oligarchy”

The Popular government is in itself less iniquitous, less abominable than despotic power. The great vice of democracy is certainly not tyranny and cruelty: [But] democracy seems suitable only to a very little country, and further it must be happily situated. Small though it be, it will make many mistakes, because it will be composed of men. Discord will reign there as in a monastery; but there will be no St. Bartholomew, no Irish massacres. . . no inquisition, no condemnation to the galleys for having taken some water from the sea without paying for it, unless one supposes this republic composed of devils in a corner of hell. One questions every day whether a republican government is preferable to a king's government? The dispute ends always by agreeing that to govern men is very difficult. The Jews had God Himself for master; see what has happened to them on that account: nearly always have they been beaten and slaves, and today do you not find that they cut a pretty figure?

The critical force of the talmudic narrative resides in its rejection of Plato's model of the philosopher-king. Rashbi and his son do not return to rule, nor to subject the world to their grasp of theoretical Torah. If anything, they return as enablers

אנחנו ראינו, כי המון העם יכול להיות קל-אמוּנה, פוסח על שתי הסעפּים, אכזרי, בלתי צודק, שואף נקמה ועמוּס משפּטים קדוּמים. ראינוּ זאת ביחסוֹ של המון העם אל המלחמה, ראינוּ זאת בּזמן המהפּכות. אנחנוּ היהוּדים, ראינו זאת בּיחסם של עמים רבּים ודוקא המוני העם אלינו. מי שזוכר, מה נקל היה להתעוֹת בּשוא את כּל העמים בּימי המלחמה, מה כבדה משוּגָתם – במוּבן זה או אחר – אחרי המלחמה, זה אינו יכול להודות בעיקר הזה של חכמת העם בּלי היסוּס הלב; ומי שמעלה בזכרונו את האַכזריוּת ללא גבוּל ואת יצר ההרס של המוני העם בימי המלחמה וביחוּד בּימי מלחמת האזרחים, עם כל הפּרעות נגד היהוּדים ולא יהוּדים, זה לא יאמין בּטוּבוֹ של העם.

המדינה הדמוֹקראטית לא שימשה יותר אמצעי – לשפּר את חיי בני האדם ויחסיהם, לעשותם טהורים יותר ולהשכּין בּהם צדק יותר – כי אם עשׂוּה תכלית לעצמה וראוּ בה את המטרה הסוֹפית של המלחמה המדינית. הסיסמה היתה: “חירוּת לעם” – ולא היה ענין מיוּחד בּזה מה יעשה העם בחירוּתו. זה הטביע על הדמוקראטיה של המאה התשע-עשרה אופי של פּאסיביוּת ורשלנוּת; ואחרי שנתמלאוּ דרישותיה העיקריות של הדמוֹקראטיה ברוב הארצות של אירוֹפּה המערבית, נתגלתה ריקנוּתה. כיום יקרה, ולעתים קרובות, שלעם ישנוֹ החופש ואין הוּא יודע כיצד להשתמש בּו.

אבל תמיד נמצא מיעוּט בּעם אשר ידע מה מוּטל עליו לעשות, אותו המיעוּט שהוּא הנהוּ נוֹשאָה האמתי של ההתחדשוּת האנוֹשית, הלאומית והחברתית והוא הוא הנלחם בּשוּרוֹת הראשונות בעד התחדשוּת והמביא את הקרבנּוֹת הכי גדולים, ושאחריו הולך העם. ולמרות כל האמוּנה בדמוֹקראטיות של המאה התשע-עשרה לא שינה הפּרוֹצס ההיסטורי את מהלכוֹ אף במאָה הזאת: המוּעט הרבוֹלוּציוֹני פילס את הנתיב בשביל המון העם שנהר אחריו.

איזה אדם ראוי למלוך, חכם שמלך או מלך שידרוש.

חזון האנושות האחידה והמאוחדת הריהו חזון בלהות, ומשמעו דיכוי כל אפשרות התפתחות והתקדמות שאינו משאיר מקום למאבקים על דעות שונות, ובעולם שאין בו מקום למאבקים ערכיים, אין בו גם טעם לחיים.

השלום העולמי באמצעות ממשלה עולמית, שהוא כנראה אותו אידיאל אליו נתכוונו בוני המיגדל, פירושו יצירת כוח שלטון מוחלט, ודבר כזה אסור שיינתן בידי האדם. קולקטיביות רעיונית ושלטונית היא הסכנה הגדולה ביותר הצפויה לאנושות, ואסמכתא לכך יכול לשמש ההיגד שנאמר מפי ה' לאחר המבול: "כי יצר לב האדם רע מנעריו" (בראשית ח כא).

האדם באשר הוא אדם הריהו יצור מסוכן, ומן ההכרח שלא יהיה בידיו ריכוז סמכות שלטונית, דבר שעלול תמיד להתגלגל לרשעות, ועל החברה האנושית מוטל החיוב לחתור לכך שהסמכות תהיה מפוזרת, לצורך נייטרליזציה של מגמות אנושיות מסוימות על-ידי מגמות אנושיות אחרות המנוגדות להן.

עולם שיש בו שפות רבות ודברים רבים השונים זה מזה, הוא גם העולם בו ניתן לחתור לקראת מטרות, לחתור להגשמת ערכים ומילוי משימות, מה שאין כן בעולם הריכוזי הטוטאליטרי, שאיננו פותח שום פתח לחתירה לקראת משהו שאיננו קיים באותה מציאות מונוליטית.

בני דור הפלגה נתכוונו לקיים באמצעים מלאכותיים, טכניים ואירגוניים, את אידיאל מה שאנו מכירים מההיסטוריה של דורנו ומלחמת העולם השנייה, במונח שהיה ממחוללי השואה ולאו דוקא של עם-ישראל בלבד, אלא של האנושות כולה, מה שנקרא בגרמנית בעולמו של הצורר היטלר 'גלייך שלטונג', רעיון שאין חמור וקשה ממנו, ומשמעותו מוכרת לנו היום אפילו יותר משהכירוה הדורות שקדמו לנו, וזוהי למעשה אותה עשיית-שם המבוטאת בפסוק: "הבה נבנה-לנו עיר ומגדל וראשו בשמים, ונעשה-לנו שם" (בראשית יא ד).

כוונת דברים אלה אינה אלא הטלת מרות אחת, על עדר אנושי בעל "שפה אחת ודברים אחדים", המרוכז סביב המיגדל, וזוהי הדגמתה המילולית של הטוטאליטאריות, אשר את זוועותיה ומוראותיה מכירים אנו היטב.

ראוי שניתן לבנו ודעתנו על כך, שהרעיון אותו הוגים גם כיום בדבר שלום-עולמי שיושג ע"י ממשלה עולמית, פירושו מתן כוח שלטון מוחלט בידי בני אדם, ומן החובה להדגיש כי בשום פנים ואופן אסור שיימצא כוח כזה בידי האדם, אלא דוקא הדיפרנציאציה, הפיצול, והעובדה שאין רשות עולמית עליונה אחת, אלא קיימות רשויות מפוצלות, אשר כל אחת מגבילה את יכולת פעולתה של האחרת, זהו התנאי הראשון לאפשרות קיום אנושי ראוי לשמו.

כל שלטון יש בו בהכרח מן הרשעות, אולם נייטרליזציה של רשעות אחת ע"י רשעויות אחרות הפועלות נגדה, היא האפשרות היחידה העשויה להבטיח מניעת עריצות מוחלטת בקרב המין האנושי.

שלום עולמי שיושג כביכול בכוחה של ממשלה עולמית מרכזית, זהו כניראה הרעיון אליו נתכוונו בוני העיר והמיגדל, ומשמעותו יצירת כוח שלטוני מוחלט, ובענין זה אמר כבר היסטוריון אנגלי דגול - לורד אקטון: 'כל שלטון משחית את האדם, ושלטון מוחלט מהווה ערובה להשחתה מוחלטת'.

דברי הנצי"ב (ר' נפתלי צבי יהודה ברלין, 1893-1817) נאמרו ונכתבו כארבע-מאות שנה לאחר 'ספורנו', וזו לשון הרב:

"שפה אחת", זה גרם לחטא ראשון, הינו שיסכימו לשבת כולן בקיבוץ אחד, וזהו נגד רצון ה' שאמר: "שרצו בארץ ורבו-בה" (בראשית ט ז), הינו להתהלך בארץ לאורכה ולרוחבה'; ובענין "ודברים אחדים" מציין הנצי"ב שהתורה אינה מפרשת מה היה חטאם, אלא רק רומזת על כך. חטאם הנוסף לא היה בתוכן הדברים שדיברו אלא: 'ללמדנו דלא משום הדברים התעורר הקדוש-ברוך-הוא, אלא משום שהיו אחדים יהיו מה שיהיו'.

אשר לפסוק - "ויאמר ה' הן עם אחד ושפה אחת לכלם וזה החלם לעשות ועתה לא-יבצר מהם כל אשר יזמו לעשות" (בראשית יא ו) מוסיף הרב: 'משמעות עם-אחד הינו, במינהג אחד'... וזאת בניגוד לברכת יצחק את יעקב: "והיית לקהל עמים" (בראשית כח ג); 'עתה אינו אלא התחלת דבר-עבירה במה שרוצים שיהיו ביישוב אחד; אם יגמרו המיגדל, יבואו למחשבה שנייה למנוע בעל-כורחו (כל אדם) הנבדל ממחשבתם זו, וזהו דבר רצח ושוד המשחית את היישוב לגמרי, ולזה לא מועיל מה שכעת המה מתאחדים בדעה'; עד כאן דברי הנצי"ב.

כלומר, לא בכל רעיון של אחדות יש משום ברכה, והרי זה מן המפורסמות, כל שלטון באשר הוא שלטון תהא כוונתו מה שתהיה ואפילו לשם-שמים, נוטה להידרדר לרשעות, וכאמור אין תקנה לאדם אלא שתהא נייטרליזציה של רשעות אחת על-ידי רשעות אחרת, ועל ידי כך יחלש כוח שתיהן, מה שאינו אפשרי וכמעט לא יתכן בתנאים של רשות מרכזית אחת השלטת בכיפה.

Judean religion seems to have reflected a royal theology, or ideology, based on a covenant (brit), an unconditional divine promise to David that his dynasty would rule forever, "as long as the sun and moon exist" (Ps. 89.37-38). The king was viewed as the "son" of God (Pss. 2.7; 89.27; 2 Sam. 7.14), though whether this implied actual royal divinity is questionable. There is little doubt that this royal religion was imported into Judah from primarily Egyptian and Phoenician sources. The terms used to describe the king in the biblical texts that most directly reflect Judean royal tradition, the "royal psalms" (Pss. 2, 20, 21, 45, 72, 89) are used elsewhere only of God. Also prominent in this royal cult were notions of unconditional divine protection of Zion and Jerusalem, amounting to what has been termed a doctrine of the "inviolability of Zion." (This notion is also expressed in Isa. chs 1-39.) It was believed that no enemy could capture the city in which was located God's sacred house, the Temple built and maintained by the king, which was viewed as the royal chapel. The "Zion Psalms" (Pss. 46, 47, 48) are possibly early expressions of this doctrine, which also figures prominently in later prophetic messianic visions. The aim of this political, religious, and cultic complex was undoubtedly to strengthen the claim of the monarchy to legitimacy. It seems to have succeeded, because Judean dynastic kingship remained stable for over three centuries (the brief usurpation by Athaliah is the only exception; she was a northerner, the daughter of the Phoenician Jezebel). Northern Israel, by contrast, probably lacking such a royal ideology, saw the rise and fall of many ruling houses. The main ideas of royal religion became transmuted in biblical religion into messianic eschatology

In H, this form of standardization receives an expansive makeover, moving beyond cultic practice to cover mundane activities and behaviors that have little connection with ritual matters. By calling on all the Israelites to enter into an ongoing process of collective sanctification via daily law observance, H effectively extends the pervasiveness of Priestly law (and priestly authority) into virtually all aspects of the Israelites’ lives

‏This more expansive form of standardized conduct might be appropriately understood as a form of “conventionalism,” to use the term of German social theorist Theodor Adorno (1903–1969). Conventionalism refers to a form of groupthink that promotes obedience to central authorities and the associated rejection of behaviors that characterize outsiders. In the case of H, holiness is a form of conventionalism because it promotes obedience to a central legal standard, mandating separation from “Others” (notably the Egyptians but also the Canaanites) while demanding collective loyalty and standardized everyday practices

‏H’s focus on law obedience also resonates with Italian philosopher Antonio Gramsci’s (1891–1937) concept of “hegemony” — namely, the idea that, in order to consolidate power, elites set the standards of judgment and cultural norms by which everyday life is evaluated; the consent of those under their control is seemingly voluntary because compliance appears to be common sense and beneficial way in which everyday existence should be organized

The final verse of the book of Judges attributes the societal chaos of the preceding chapters to the lack of a king, where absent any objective rule of law, “right” is determined by the individual. However, the narratives of the monarchy that follow in the book of Samuel are instead crafted to rule out kingship as a viable political guarantor of a stable polis

The narrative captures a continuity of consciousness between the pre-monarchic and monarchic regimes where, despite the introduction of a new political authority, no such authority is acknowledged, neither from the people below nor above from Saul, the very seat of authority itself. As such, Saul can be more appropriately characterized as Israel’s last judge rather than its first king: there is no ruler nor is there a rule of law by which the state or individuals can order their affairs. Saul is the failed experiment with kingship that inaugurates what is endemic to virtually the entire sequence of subsequent historical narratives regarding kings

Moshe Halbertal and Stephen Holmes show how the beautifully crafted narratives of Saul and David cut to the core of politics, exploring themes that resonate wherever political power is at stake. Through stories such as Saul’s madness, David’s murder of Uriah, the rape of Tamar, and the rebellion of Absalom, the book’s author deepens our understanding not only of the necessity of sovereign rule but also of its costs — to the people it is intended to protect and to those who wield it. What emerges from the meticulous analysis of these narratives includes such themes as the corrosive grip of power on those who hold and compete for power; the ways in which political violence unleashed by the sovereign on his own subjects is rooted in the paranoia of the isolated ruler and the deniability fostered by hierarchical action through proxies; and the intensity with which the tragic conflict between political loyalty and family loyalty explodes when the ruler’s bloodline is made into the guarantor of the all-important continuity of sovereign power
