Bid to air Yanks games on WOR

With Yankees and Mets radio rights set to expire in October, the smart money had long been on the market’s two sports stations — WFAN and ESPN — to land one or the other of the highly coveted properties.

But a new player has emerged, and it looks as if it’s playing for keeps.

Clear Channel Media and Entertainment, which owns WOR Radio, has made a recent bid in excess of the $14 million currently paid by CBS for the rights to the Yankees’ broadcasts, sources told The Post.

CBS, which owns WFAN as well as WCBS, has owned the Yankees rights since 2002. Now, with two spots on the radio dial that are dedicated to its sports station — WFAN can be heard at 660 AM and 101.9 FM — it seems unlikely CBS will let the rights go without a fight.

If Clear Channel grabs the Yankees, it would mean the Mets are alive with both WFAN, the franchise’s radio home since the station went on the air in 1987, and ESPN. The team, which receives between $6 million and $7 million a year under its current deal, could even find itself the object of a bidding war.

Clear Channel declined to comment.

ESPN had been expected to go hard after one of the teams.

Conservative radio host Michael Savage teased a “major announcement” on his website earlier today, and tonight, he delivered. Savage predicted that he will be replacing Sean Hannity’s time slot on Cumulus Media’s network of stations. While Hannity’s fate appeared to be tied to that of Rush Limbaugh in the initial reports on the Cumulus move, Mediaite has learned from a talk radio source Limbaugh is likely to stay. Mediaite has also learned from multiple talk radio sources that Savage’s prediction will likely be confirmed soon.

“I predict, right here, right now, that I Michael Savage and the Savage Nation is going to take over The Sean Hannity Show time slot by the end of the year,” Savage said. “He’s probably a nice guy, but his time is come and his time has gone,” he continued, and “I am the heir apparent to afternoon drive on the east coast and around America on Cumulus stations, which have the most powerful stations in the radio world.”

The latest rumor in the saga of PREMIERE's negotiations with CUMULUS MEDIA over the carriage of the RUSH LIMBAUGH and SEAN HANNITY shows is the proclamation by CUMULUS MEDIA NETWORKS' MICHAEL SAVAGE that he will take over SEAN HANNITY's time slot on CUMULUS stations, while POLITICO's DYLAN BYERS reports that sources tell him CUMULUS will sign up to continue to carry LIMBAUGH's show on its stations.

SAVAGE told listeners THURSDAY, "I predict, right here, right now, that I, MICHAEL SAVAGE and the SAVAGE NATION, is going to take over THE SEAN HANNITY SHOW time slot by the end of the year, I am the heir apparent to afternoon drive on the east coast and around AMERICA on CUMULUS stations, which have the most powerful stations in the radio world.”

BYERS added that "sources familiar with the negotiations" confirmed that CUMULUS is expected to drop HANNITY but re-up its deals for LIMBAUGH. Neither CUMULUS nor PREMIERE's parent CLEAR CHANNEL offered comment, nor did representatives of the hosts, and BYERS noted the "fluid" nature of the story.

The Yankees and CBS Radio are close to a deal that would put the Yankees on WFAN starting in 2014, a person familiar with the negotiations told Newsday.


The Yankees currently are carried by WCBS Radio, which like WFAN, is owned by CBS. The current one-year contract is believed to pay the team $13 to $14 million.
