A 6 month shift should be like in 40,000 years from now. But it wil take less than that for the gedolim to start worrying about it. If Moshiach is still not here and the world would still be something like it is tday (not very likely) you can expect a big schism within ortghodox judaism over that issue.

I don't think anyone will fall away in the year 6000. The source for the world ending is too weak. It is not like it's the first agadata that, taken literally, doesn't seem to fit reality. Furthermore, in that beraita is says that the 6000 years is divided into thirds and the last 2000 years is yemos hamoshiach. And the Rambam has very strong words that this agadata is not to be counted on and that the world will not end. There are also other souces brought down in the sefer "meshichei sheker" that give other reasons why even according to that gemara the world could continue (even after 7000 which is another shita). Now these shitos are not widely known, but when it starts getting closer to 6000 they will be more and more popularized and by then no one will take that year too seriously.
