In 1828 Nicholas I of Russia mandated the building of the sea fortress of Patarei. Completed in 1840, it is located on area of 4 hectares (10 acres). Over the years it has had different functions – in 1867 functioning as barracks, in 1920 as a prison and since 2007 as a Culture Park.

When Hadar Goldin was kidnapped in southern Gaza on Aug. 1, his IDF Givati brigade launched an all-out assault on the area. The details of the assault, known as a Hannibal Directive, were murky, and many criticized the IDF for firing indiscriminately.
On Tuesday, the website Ynet leaked a set of IDF recordings in a video that offers a firsthand look at the violent day surrounding the kidnapping. A narrator describes the logic behind many of the military maneuvers, and the camera follows soldiers as they fire at buildings and search for the tunnel to which Goldin was taken by Hamas fighters.
