Rabbi's business must have grown stale, coming to Ramapo all the way from Riverdale, just to pick up another sale

By Benny Polatseck

Lest week Ari Hart posted a letter to Rabbi Avi Shafran in the Jewish Week in regards to the East Ramapo Central School District Issue.

Click here to read Rabbi Hart's Letter.

Those are my impressions:

I was wavering if I should describe this conjecture as Hideous? However after reading the very first line of Rabbi Ari Hart's inattentive piece, it was obvious that Delirious would be a much better choice of words.

Upon reading on, genuinely felt sorry for Ari, so much so that I self-debated if I should even engage in countering his hard to call arguments and blatant lies when it was so obvious to me how attention needy this poor fellow is.

Rabbi Ari Hart
I had a hard time figuring out where to start because as much as tried I could not find one single paragraph that can live up to the term, "argument". I'm truly sorry, but you will have to bear with me on this one, since the best I can do, is just jump from one joke to another.

1. Ari writes that "Imagine if the yeshiva where Rabbi Shafran sent his children had a board where seven of nine members had never went (gone) to yeshiva and would never send their kids to yeshiva. Then imagine that this board gutted math, science, full day kindergarten and language classes, cut social workers and teaching aides, and also cut all elementary school art, sports and music. Then imagine that this board hired attorneys who verbally assaulted children and parents, and a president of the yeshiva board calling the yeshiva children and parents "miscreants" and "errant children." Then throw in the board selling one of the yeshiva school buildings to a public school for millions of dollars less than it was worth. (Below market value) How would Rabbi Shafran feel about (In regards to) this board? Would he feel like they had represented the needs of the yeshiva they were caring for? Would Rabbi Shafran really feel that this yeshiva board had acted "responsibly and fairly" to his children?"

The Rabbi Trying to establish a novelistic argument fails to mention that the seven members he referred too, are (and representing those) paying the greater part of those student's tuition. So dear rabbi Ari, although this may come as news to you, had I been paying the greater part of your child's education, you can be sure that if times got tough, and finances tight, I would be the one deciding when to tighten the belt. Being a devoted benefactor I would have carefully reviewed all programs and lessons, Those essential to your child's education, I would leave unobstructed, but the one's of lesser importance, I would have no choice but to cut them, in order to save the crucial base for your child's continued education.

This would take energy and hard work, because like any responsible person would do, making decisions that may impact a child's entire future, I would extensively review the items listed, until I’m one hundred percent positively sure that this is the very best that can be done in this situation.

Having spent an extensive amount of time hard at work creating this list, on behalf of your child Rabbi Hart, I would be exasperated if someone catcalls me publicly, in a scurrilous and slanderous way. And for the record let’s cogitate that

I'm the one providing most of the funding for "your" child's education.
All this work brings me nothing in return, besides being torn down by some, and have their name tarnished by the media.

Before we turn to the facts, contrary to the elusive picture that Rabbi Ari Hart is trying to paint, I wanted to analogize the horrible reports, painting the school board members as "racist", "uncaring", "ignorant", (and this is some of the better terms used), with how they conduct themselves outside of the official school capacity, so I did some extensive research on how they interact with business colleagues, clients, and employees.

This is what I found out.

Eliyahu Solomon: resides and pays taxes in Spring Valley, and was recently re-elected to a second term on the Board, which will expire in 2015.

Everyone that knows Eli, has the same few words to share about him, "An exceptional man of great integrity, who would go out of his way to help anybody.

Harry Grossman: has a finance and accounting background, but what the Board critics fail to mention is, that harry is a former math and science teacher, one that upon asking his former pupils deeply cares about education, knowledge, and curricular.

Bernard L. Charles, Jr. a African American Spring Valley resident, whose father was one of the local NAACP leaders dedicating his life for public service, his son Mr. Charles followed in his dad's footsteps

Bernard L. Charles
making his dad proud, but one vote he took that benefited Hasidim was just enough, he was vilified by them; they started calling him a political operative, which as quoted by Preserve Ramapo "He will do pretty much what he is asked to do"

I think after reading the bio of those "heartless" "racist" school board members, it is self evident, that rabbi Ari Harts flowers of fiction, are blooming like tulips in the Spring season.

However, what's even worst than his lying, is with an appetite for attention worthy of a KGB bureaucrat in the middle of a purge, Rabbi Hart puts the faith of the school district children in jeopardy, and intentionally works against their best interests.

This is not just my observation, but as you are just about to read, Rabbi Hart has admitted this in his very own words.

Aron B. Wieder Majority Leader of the Rockland County Legislature
And former ERCSD board member
In response to Rabbi Harts Facebook post, on his way to Albany to supposedly lobby on behalf of the public school children, Zevi Fischer, an attorney who has worked at the N.Y. State Attorney General's office, had this message to Hart, "Good Luck Ari, keep your eye on the prize. The issue is changing the current School Funding Formula which everyone agrees needs to be changed (including the current School Board, (Rabbi) Avi Shafran and others). That is the only way to help these children. The issue is not the individual actions of, or any individual on, the School Board".

but what he says next is even more important.

"This is what I keep talking about. Everyone is throwing baseless accusations around. None of that helps the children of East Ramapo. Let's keep our eye on the prize. If we all throw our support behind a bill which changes the current School Funding Formula, we can help these children long term".

The Agudath Isreal and leaders from every single community in Ramapo came together last Tuesday at a press conference to push formula change, emotions ran high when leaders of all communities expressed outrage in the lack of care that Albany has shown to this district, Aron Wieder Rockland County legislature majority leader pleaded with the State saying “We plead and beg our representatives in Albany to change the formula for a community that hurts, the community is crying out for help".

Then a grandmother of three attending East Ramapo Public School students took to the podium and thanked the leaders for joining united in this cause, and asked “Why doesn't Albany care for our children? Where does the millions of dollars people are paying for lottery's and scratch off's go?

In conclusion a new united effort was announced to push Albany to finely change the formula which is used to calculate monies to the district.

Yossi Gestetner co-founder of OJPAC an organization advocating on behalf of the Hassidic community announced that they will launch a radio campaign to engage the public to assist in petitioning Albany, “To help the children, we need to aim our effort at Albany instead of being at each other’s necks,”

Everyone was there, but Rabbi Ari Hart did not bother showing up.

as Zevi Fischer so clearly stated "If we all throw our support behind a bill which changes the current School Funding Formula, we can help these children long term"

Rabbi Hart knows that as well, and he admits it in his letter "Here’s where Rabbi Shafran again made an egregious error. I expressed explicit support for the Agudah’s efforts to change the formula in the article. New York states school funding regulations need to be revisited in light of some of these issues"

But here he makes a very telling statement that comes to show what his true agenda is,

"This debate is so important. It touches on so many key issues: public and private education, church and state, race, class, religion and more. Closest to both my and Rabbi Shafran’s heart though is the fundamental issue of the future of Orthodoxy. Will we be a community that is a light to the nations? Will we fulfill our mandate to be guardians of the path of God, to do righteousness and justice [Genesis 18:19]? I’m sure that both Rabbi Shafran and I would agree that we must. But in order to do so, we must allow ourselves to have a full and honest command of the facts involved, even when the reality those facts show is a painful one."

Here you go... This has never been about the children of East Ramapo, neither has this been about helping anyone, this is only about advancing one man's personal desire for attention, his personal twisted philosophy.

This is not my opinion only; it's what Rabbi Hart openly states "This debate is so important (Its about the) fundamental issue of the future of Orthodoxy".

Well Rabbi Hart, the children in Ramapo Black, White, Latino, or Jewish, do not want to be Guinea pig's for the sake of your debate, for them your "Uri L'tzedek" (A beacon for righteousness) turns out to be "Choshech Vafeilah" (utter darkness).

Well Rabbi Hart, as Harold MacMillan the prime minister of England so famously said, "When the curtain falls, the best thing an actor can do is to go away", its time to take your manufactured emotions and leave the East Ramapo Children alone.

In conclusion: I'm in no position to tell Rabbi Avi Shafran what to or not to do, and even if I were, I would not, out of respect for this man of great stature, but I would hope that Rabbi Shafran does not diminish his greatness by responding to a lightweight nobody such as you are.
